Thousands enter contest to sleep in the Eiffel Tower
Four lucky families will get the chance to sleep in the iconic Eiffel Tower over the summer. A competition launched on social media promises to give winners the experience of a lifetime and has already attracted 150,000 entries.
Rental website HomeAway has launched an online contest on Twitter and Facebook for users to sleep in an iconic Parisian location this summer. Participants stand to win a night in a purpose-built apartment on the first floor of the Eiffel Tower during the Euro 2016 sporting event, of which HomeAway is a national sponsor.
The temporary apartment has been set up and designed by French interior designer Benoît Leleu specifically for the occasion. Containing a lounge and several rooms, the apartment boasts spectacular views of Paris from 57 meters high.
Interested parties are invited to enter the contest where they will be asked to answer the question: “What would you do if the HomeAway Eiffel Tower Apartment was all yours for a night?” in 140 characters. So far, over 150,000 people have joined the contest, with most replies detailing romantic proposals, family reunions and anniversary celebrations.
Four successful candidates will be chosen and gifted a vacation package to Paris — along with five additional guests each. Alongside their overnight stay in the exclusive and custom-built accommodation inside the Eiffel Tower, winners will also be gifted three nights in a separate Parisian HomeAway holiday rental.
Mariano Dima, the chief marketing officer of HomeAway explains: “We are looking forward to helping prompt tourism to Paris, the most visited city in the world, where travelers have turned vacation rentals from an alternative to a preferred way to stay.”
In organizing this contest, Airbnb’s competitor aims to raise its profile and introduce travelers to its services through a unique marketing practice.
Brian Sharples, CEO of HomeAway says: “For over a decade, HomeAway has brought loved ones together to create unforgettable experiences in whole home vacation rentals in more than 190 countries. Now we present this unprecedented Eiffel Tower history-making adventure, guaranteed to provide the most epic vacation memories of a lifetime.”
According to HomeAway, the competition will “give guests from around the globe a chance to make history as the first to ever sleep over in the world’s most iconic landmark: the Eiffel Tower.” However, this may not be entirely true, as the tower’s architect Gustave Eiffel had his own apartment built on the fourth floor of the imposing structure, 285 meters high.
It promises to be a unique and unforgettable experience nonetheless. Winners will be announced on June 10, the day the Euro 2016 kicks off in Paris.
